When we hear the terms ‘working from home’ or ‘work at home’ I think it is necessary to define our understanding of exactly what it means. Some people might think it means the cleaning and cooking, or jobs around the home, others may think it means doing your work from home while looking after the children instead of getting in child care. It can be a loose term to cover all possibilities or a specific meaning of running a business from home. It may be that one person in a partnership is the main breadwinner and the other stays at home and does the management and maintenance of the home and looks after any children. In my experience this is in fact a full time job, usually one that is unpaid and unrecognised as work.

Define Working at Home

For the purpose of this article let us assume that working from home means that any job done is for the purpose of generating an income, and that the home based space is where time is spent doing the business activity that will ultimately generate the money that you want. There are quite a few of success stories of people starting their businesses at the kitchen table and then being so successful they expand into vast organisations making millions, so if you are working from home right now, you could be the next one of these people!

Working in the Home

In today’s modern world, work at home opportunities exist in their thousands and hundreds of thousands. These opportunities range from lingerie parties, consultancy, creative writing, artworking or computer generated activities in fact the opportunities are far too bountiful to list. If you already are an expert on a specialist area then you may find that working from home is ideal, particularly when you can work as a consultant. If you are computer literate there are many opportunities to set up an income stream for yourself within the area of freelancing. Using a room as an office in your home is particularly suited to freelance sales or programming based activities.

If you get fed up of slogging to work every day, getting stuck in traffic, or paying large sums of money for public transport each year then it might be time to consider the idea of working from home. You may feel you are the type of person who is better suited to home based work or you may have some ideas of how you can generate income if you work from home. Whatever your drive there are many opportunities and possibilities to create a new life style where you can work the hours that suit you, have a nice comfortable office and fit in family commitments.

Advantages or Working from Home

There are many benefits of working from home and usually they are the counter to the disadvantages of working in a large organisation. For each person there will be different points of view of the benefits. From my own experience of running a home based business, I love not having to commute every day. I don’t have to deal with office politics and I work the hours that fit with my natural rhythms. This means I use my energy more effectively, have more motivation to do the work, and respond to the demands of customers. No more wasteful meetings which really don’t achieve very much. Instead I can concentrate on getting the job done without the interruptions you find in a bigger company. If you want the best of working at a job and being freelance mixed with being your own boss, providing a service like freelance sales could be the perfect solution.

When a client of ours first decided to utilise freelance sales providers as part of their business development strategy they were anxious it might not work, but now as a result of careful training they wouldn’t be without them, or the results they provide!

Hours to Suit

You might just like the idea of not having to commute to work every day but have you considered not only the saving on cost but also on time? By not having to commute every day, you could save up to three hours a day, twenty one hours a week. That is more than a full working day. Consider how much time office politics and unnecessary meetings waste.

Meetings are sometimes necessary in large companies to communicate and plan work schedules, but sometimes people set up meetings unnecessarily and they achieve very little. By working in the home youmay well be saving yourself another12 or so hours a week. Consider what you could do with the equivalent of an extra two to three days a week.

I found that when working from home I could achieve in one morning the amount of work it would take me all day to complete when working in an company.

Working at home means that you can prioritise your tasks and work the hours to suit your natural energy levels. Some days I can work until 12 midnight, and other days I might go and have my haircut at 9:00am, or go to the supermarket, at the times when everyone else is working and the shops are quiet. Working the hours to suit yourself may mean you are far more effective and creative than if you did a ‘nine to five’ job with a boss and colleagues to please. Being able to concentrate on the jobs without interruptions means there is greater energy and motivation to respond to the enquiries and needs of the customers.

When I first started my own business, I was able to integrate running the home with my new work. After a concentrated spell of brain work on the computer, I would hang out the washing to dry. The activity and fresh air would refresh my brain and I could return to work with some new ideas.

Tax

One of the enormous advantages of working from home running your own business is being able to offset legitimate expenses before paying tax. When you are earning a salary, your tax is deducted at source, before paying out anything. So in fact the money you have available for paying bills and living expenses is reduced. When you are self employed the savings can be significant because genuine business expenses are taken from your revenue before you pay tax. Tax is calculated on the final profit and is slightly less than personal tax on a salary, at the time or writing. If you don’t have a dedicated business phone you will need to work out a percentage of household bills to be paid out of the business earnings. Lighting and heating and car costs are all legitimate business expenses as are accountancy fees, insurance and repairs and maintenance. The mileage you can claim is set down by the government, but it goes a long way towards the costs of using the family car for business. You can charge a rent per year for using a dedicated room in your home. The way our own business manages this is to include heat and light as part of the rent so there are less bills to worry about.

Some large companies encourage employees to work from home several days a week because it is a way of freeing up restricted office space. This was one of several innovative ideas to manage resources some 10 or 15 years ago. But even if that is not an option for you, it is still possible to set up a home computer and build a good income working part-time at home. Almost half of all self-employed workers, and more than 60 percent of those with home-based businesses, indicated the main reason for working from home was because their “business could be conducted from the home”.

One example of a company that is run from home, is a customer of ours who run www.electricitypricecomparison.net , which provides a valuable service to households and businesses due to increasing fuel bills right now.

There is a common idea that running your own business is too risky or difficult. But today with the advent of the internet, home run businesses are easier than ever to set up and manage. The accounts can be done on a computer which once mastered becomes very easy. Advertising is extremely effective and relatively cheap if done through a website. So if you are capable at what you do, and you build up a reputation for delivering what you promise, then there is no reason why you cannot be a successful entrepreneur running the business from your home office.

Success Stories from Home Workers

A friend of mine worked in local government as a planner. He is a qualified surveyor with a degree, but working in local government only paid a poor salary, although it was a secure position and a good pension on retirement at 65 years of age. His wife was a teacher, and she earned slightly more than he did, so together they could just about get by on both salaries bringing up their two children.

One day he announced he was setting up in business on his own. He had had enough of the poor treatment, overwork and lack of respect he received in the department, as well as the low pay. He had managed to save some money in the bank which gave him a bit of security. Since day one he has had lots of work, advising people on planning applications, the correct procedures for waste disposal, and what is or is not allowable in the planning world. He hasn’t looked back since and to this day he has not had to dip into his savings to top up his earnings. They have never been so well off and when his wife became ill and had to give up her teaching job, they were still able to manage comfortably. He started up in the small back bedroom of their town house although he has now recruited other members of staff and expanded into separate offices. Due to being a planning consultant, he decided he had to work from legitimate commercial premises, although he still works from home 2-3 days a week.

Britain was once a nation of cottage industries and to some extent that attitude is still part of our culture. Being independent, doing an honest day’s work for an honest day’s wage means that a person can respect themselves and live in harmony with their neighbour. Once industrialisation began, that independent way of life was swept away and in the process something important was lost. I think that in Britain as well as in many other countries, there is a yearning to return to a way of life that is decent, sincere and honest. The fear of failure may prevent a lot of people from achieving their dream of working from home, but if it is something you really want to do then take heart and take a good hard look at the possibility. Ask yourself the question honestly “What is to stop me from taking advantage of a new lifestyle opportunity and working from home?”

When looking for an idea or possibility of a home based business people often have many more skills than they are aware of. Sometimes they are passionate about a hobby for which they may have considerable abilities but may not be thought of as important in the context of work. There are many cases where hobbies are transformed into a lucrative business. We all have significant transferable skills, but often we are blind to our own capabilities.

One of the up and coming work from home opportunities is ebay we recently took on a client who has made a reasonable income out of selling stop pop-up software and a good thing about ebay is that you can even start part time, working evenings and weekends, as well as still doing your main job.

Stress and Working from Home

Sometimes setting up a new organisation on your own can be stressful with not having the security of a regular wage and the question of it being a success. Once the business is underway, you will soon begin to get a feel of the lead time needed to finish projects and get paid. I know now from experience that as long as there are leads in the pipeline that about half will come to fruition and generate income. Regular clients, repeat orders and new work coming out of the blue is to be expected if your concern is thriving. There is a rule of thumb that 20% of your customer base provides eighty percent of your revenue.

To offset the type of stress outlined above is that a work from home lifestyle has advantages in terms of family commitments, working environment, and motivation. Being able to optimise your work so that you maximise energy and resources, gives you a sense of well being that leaves you feeling happy and healthy and eventually wealthy.

Prepare

If you feel you have the urge to be working from home, then use your brain to plan. You can project and budget for the future and get funding in place, even if it does mean missing the family holiday this year. Study any required new skills by going on programmes and set yourself up with the necessary equipment. Give your current workplace the appropriate notice to fit with your target. Finally have a clear idea in your head of how you will be in your new lifestyle, and picture in your mind how it feels.

Marketing

The next thing you will want to become skilled in is marketing. Setting up a website and marketing your home based business on the internet may be easier than you think and can be very effective way to achieve marketing success. Obviously, the more time you invest in marketing, the more your customer base is going to grow. There are also a lot of freelance work provider websites these days where they do the marketing for you in return for a small commission from every job you complete, these kinds of websites are revolutionising the work at home industry making it much more accessible for more and more people.

Conclusion

Working from home has many advantages and benefits. If you have the desire to become your own boss and it feels right to you, then there are plenty of opportunities for you to fulfil your potential. There are many success stories of men and women setting a business from the home and becoming much larger successful organisations. All you have to do is to follow your route to a better life. Work towards your targets and pay attention to the stages along the way. I know it may sound obvious, but so many people do not do the obvious.

Having recently purchased a property for restoration in Dorset, I soon found that the amount of work was more than I had at first considered, with a certain amount of rot and wood worm getting into the oak beams and wooden staircase. My first job was to look into skip hire Dorset so that I could dispose of timber and rubble away from the build site, rot and woodworm isn’t something you want to be introducing to new oak beams, larch cladding etc that you get from the Timber supplier. Once I had acro propped the site of the rotten oak beam, I bought in an oak beam from a local hardwood supplier and gradually raised the beam into place using blocks to get it where I needed it (the raising system looked like something that would have been at home in an Egyptian archaeology dig, but is great if it is only you available for the lifting). Once the beam was in place and set upon a couple of cap stones I plastered the ends into place.

The stairs on the other hand was more of a crowbar job, I made sure I took as many measurements as possible measuring the rise of each step and the depth from front to back. Once I had stripped out the framework I measured the footprint of the stairs and height from the ground up to the level of the upstairs floor. This gave me a basic framework from which to work to when working out the layout of the new wooden staircase. I opted to go with an oak staircase as it tied in with the numerous beams around the house and timber supply wasn’t that difficult as there are numerous suppliers online that are really helpful. I spoke to an actual staircase manufacturer to make up some of the spindles I wanted for the stairs and then a local blacksmith made me up some contemporary metal pieces to mix between each spindle the end result was pretty impressive even if I do say so myself.

On the first floor the master bedroom had a large section of its oak flooring riddled with rot due to a large patch of the tiled roof having lost its tiles and allowed the rain to leak through to the floor below. I spoke to reclamation yards and timber yards before coming across a hardwood flooring supplier that seemed to be able to match the grain and colouring of the oak floor. A top tip that I would offer anyone that is stripping out a lot of timber from a home is to burn the wood onsite. It saves on the cost of skip hire and makes sure that you aren’t part of the spread of woodworm. Fortunately for me most of the joists on the first floor were intact so once I had sorted out the issues with the floor. If you do take on a restoration project make sure that you take your time when assessing the amount of work needed to replace the damaged components, let me put it this way oak really isn’t cheap. Not to sound all doom and gloom, restoration is an extremely satisfying way of getting a home that you want without paying out the bloated house prices that the market sees at present, just make sure you do your homework before you start.

In 1758, Benjamin Franklin and John Hadley, professor of chemistry at Cambridge University, conducted an experiment to explore the principle of evaporation as a means to rapidly cool an object. Franklin and Hadley confirmed that evaporation of highly volatile liquids such as alcohol and ether, could be used to drive down the temperature of an object past the freezing point of water. They conducted their experiment with the bulb of a mercury thermometer as their object and with a bellows used to “quicken” the evaporation; they lowered the temperature of the thermometer bulb down to 7°F while the ambient temperature was 65°F.

Franklin noted that soon after they passed the freezing point of water (32°F) a thin film of ice formed on the surface of the thermometer’s bulb and that the ice mass was about a quarter inch thick when they stopped the experiment upon reaching 7°F. Franklin concluded, “From this experiment, one may see the possibility of freezing a man to death on a warm summer’s day”

In 1805, American inventor Oliver Evans designed but never built a refrigeration system based on the vapor-compression refrigeration cycle rather than chemical solutions or volatile liquids such as ethyl ether.

In 1820, the British scientist Michael Faraday liquefied ammonia and other gases by using high pressures and low temperatures.

An American living in Great Britain, Jacob Perkins, obtained the first patent for a vapor-compression refrigeration system in 1834. Perkins built a prototype system and it actually worked, although it did not succeed commercially.

In 1842, an American physician, John Gorrie, designed the first system for refrigerating water to produce ice. He also conceived the idea of using his refrigeration system to cool the air for comfort in homes and hospitals (i.e., air-conditioning). His system compressed air, then partially cooled the hot compressed air with water before allowing it to expand while doing part of the work required to drive the air compressor. That isentropic expansion cooled the air to a temperature low enough to freeze water and produce ice, or to flow “through a pipe for effecting refrigeration otherwise” as stated in his patent granted by the U.S. Patent Office in 1851. Gorrie built a working prototype, but his system was a commercial failure.

Alexander Twining began experimenting with vapor-compression refrigeration in 1848 and obtained patents in 1850 and 1853. He is credited with having initiated commercial refrigeration in the United States by 1856.

Widespread commercial refrigeration use

By the 1870s breweries had become the largest users of commercial refrigeration units, though some still relied on harvested ice. Though the ice-harvesting industry had grown immensely by the turn of the 20th century, pollution and sewage had begun to creep into natural ice making it a problem in the metropolitan suburbs. Eventually breweries began to complain of tainted ice. This raised demand for more modern and consumer-ready refrigeration and ice-making machines. In 1895, German engineer Carl von Linde set up a large-scale process for the production of liquid air and eventually liquid oxygen for use in safe household refrigerators.

Refrigerated railroad cars were introduced in the US in the 1840s for the short-run transportation of dairy products. In 1867 J.B. Sutherland of Detroit, Michigan patented the refrigerator car designed with ice tanks at either end of the car and ventilator flaps near the floor which would create a gravity draft of cold air through the car.

By 1900 the meat packing houses of Chicago had adopted ammonia-cycle industrial refrigeration. By 1914 almost every location used artificial refrigeration. The big meat packers, Armour, Swift, and Wilson, had purchased the most expensive units which they installed on train cars and in branch houses and storage facilities in the more remote distribution areas.

It was not until the middle of the 20th century that refrigeration units were designed for installation on tractor-trailer rigs (trucks or lorries). Refrigerated vehicles are used to transport perishable goods, such as frozen foods, fruit and vegetables, and temperature-sensitive chemicals. Most modern refrigerators keep the temperature between -40 and +20 °C and have a maximum payload of around 24 000 kg. gross weight (in Europe).

Probably you are familiar with term IQ test. In a lot of printed publications, focused on women in particular, you may find them. Doing a web search will also find as many as you like. You’ll get this page of questions filling your screen and you’ve got to select your answer online quickly. Press ‘Submit’ and seconds later you will have the judgement of your mental capacity. Neat and simple.

But to start from the beginning, what is an IQ test really? And what does the score mean? IQ is the ‘Intelligence Quotient’, a number telling how ’smart’ you are compared to other people. It may be used to see if you are likely to do well in some proffessions or in academic studies.

The IQ test measures your intelligence to solve problems written on paper. Written problem solving is the core idea of IQ tests. The raw test scores are then compared to other persons. It’s one of the standard methods to estimate human intelligence.

IQ 100 is defined as the average of the whole population. Any score over 100 means you are more intelligent than average. Any score less than 100 indicates your intelligence level doesn’t match up to the average John Doe.

Advantages of the IQ Test

  • Recruitment Let’s say you’re hiring someone for a new job. You could get a better understanding of the applicant’s intelligence by conducting an IQ test. You could select the type of test to use. This should be guided by the requirements for the type of work offered. A high score would indicate the candidate is well suited for the position. Some candidates who would probably not be able to do the work could be screened out this way.
  • College entrance IQ tests could complement the SAT in the judgement of a student’s intellectual potential. As there are often fewer places than applicants, this could be an additional screening tool. That way there is a better chance to pick the top performers and weed out students with less potential.

Negative sides of the IQ test

  • IQ tests don’t tell the full story Many people who score well in IQ tests may not perform well in real life situations. Quite a large share of high IQ persons are simply not as successful as you would expect from their IQ score.
  • Other factors may be more important Many students with high IQ are a dissapointment when they hand in their term papers. Studies have found out that a student’s self-discipline is a better gauge of how well they’ll do at college or high school. Relying only on smartness is not enough you must put whatever IQ you have to work to do really well. Quite often students who made a stellar performance with little work at lower levels fare less well as courses become more difficult, as they are not used to work and become discouraged when they do not immediately understand.
  • Many abilites are not measured by IQ testsLeadership is one area which is not measured by IQ tests It doesn’t measure your emotional quotient or EQ – how you’ll get along with other people, including co-workers, superiors and peers. There is also the theory of multiple intelligences, that defines 8 different aspects of intelligence that you may have to varying degrees. Intelligence is so much more than a single score.

The most common place for cold sores is on or next to the lips, less often on the nose, chin and other parts of the face. But they can come on any part of the body.
