You have decided to work from home, and now you’ve got the task of setting up an office area in your home. Here are a few essentials that you shouldn’t miss out when setting up a home based office.

Office Furniture:

You need to adequately equip your office out with comfortable and practical furniture. The first thing you must understand when working from home is that you need to separate your home and work life-balance and that starts with an adequately furnished room.

It’s no good sitting on your sofa with your laptop with the TV on in the background. You are not setting your psyche up that you are now at work and not playing around with your PC!

Fair enough, your commute will now not be that 1 hour train journey and it’s been replaced with that 1 minute kitchen to spare room/office journey, but you must get in the right frame of mind.

You need,

A separate room as an office
A desk and chair
Separate Phone Line
Some kind of filing cabinet
Noticeboard

Office Equipment:

PC/Laptop
Printer
Telephone
Diary (book or online software)

Don’t forget that all of these expenses can be set off against your tax so please remember to keep all your receipts.

You may also choose to decorate your new office but don’t take this lightly. Choose your colors wisely, it’s important. For example, try to avoid strong colors such as reds, blues and yellows and go for more tranquil and mood relaxing colors as gentle sage greens, light beige’s and creams.

These are just a few basics the basics of setting up a home office, but the most important thing to remember is not to spend money you don’t have. Keep buying new equipment as and when you need it and as and when you can afford it!
